Ronald Westerhuis @ Broomhill

Statement by Rinus Van de Sande

An email with some images, a couple of years ago, made me decide to visit Ronald Westerhuis in his Dutch studio. I was immediately taken by his monumental abstract stainless steel objects, designed with such thought, to stand out in landscapes or suburban enclosures, when touched by sun light they reflected a heightened spirit and energy.

After years working in the offshore sea rigs making small Maquette’s in his spare time, Westerhuis found his creative destiny as a sculptor with a confidence I seldom see in a young artist. We sat down in his studio, surrounded by steel, tools and sculptures, we became connected, friends.

The arrangements to ship some work over to Broomhill Sculpture Gardens were agreed and in the spring of 2006 we had 3 stunning sculptures in the garden. My favourite Westerhuis piece ‘Bounce’ was sited along the lake reflecting light over the water from a large stainless ball, exploding and responding as a mirror with a surreal backdrop when approached.

The work was received very well, and during my second visit we decided to produce a catalogue for a major exhibition in 2008 at Broomhill. It has taken a year to get this edition together, Westerhuis’ approach to sculpture made 2007 an unforgettable year with Major commissions in Holland, developments in China, a private sale to the King of Monaco and the preparation for a large exhibition in Norway in 2008.

The first time we met, Westerhuis described his dream to create sculptures that would become landmarks, my response was reserved, but now I think he can build anything!

The Artist Speaks

We have asked the artist to provide a statement about their work, an edited personal history, and a selection of exhibitions and commissions. The content here is entirely their words and selection. Works illustrated here have been chosen by the artist.

The works shown on this page are not necessarily on display at Broomhill.

“Travelling, stainless steel and art are reasons for my existence.

“Everything concerning my contact with the world can be traced back to emotions and philosophy.

“Without starting points and not searching for an ideal, I don't believe in boundaries.

“By placing my sculptures I find my way to peace and the future.

“Considering my sculptures as silent status, indestructibly dated.”
